Emergence, Reduction, and Real Patterns

A Synthesis of Contemporary Dennettian Naturalism

The concept of emergence occupies a central place in contemporary philosophy of science, from biology and condensed-matter physics to the philosophy of mind. Yet it is often used ambiguously, sometimes referring merely to complexity or practical unpredictability, and sometimes suggesting the appearance of genuinely new entities or causal powers.

This article develops a strictly naturalistic account of emergence inspired by Daniel Dennett’s notion of real patterns and extended through the work of David Wallace, Andrew Melnyk, James Ladyman, and Sean Carroll.

Its central claim is that ontological reduction must be distinguished from explanatory reduction. A world may be entirely physical without every legitimate explanation being replaceable by a description formulated in the language of fundamental physics. Organisms, mental states, phonons, institutions, and other higher-level structures need not be fundamental in order to be real.

Within this framework, weak emergence is understood as the appearance of stable, robust, and explanatorily indispensable patterns at higher levels of organisation. These patterns depend entirely on their physical realization, but they cannot be dismissed as mere conveniences or useful fictions. Their reality lies in the objective regularities they capture and in the explanatory and predictive work they perform.

Drawing on examples ranging from Conway’s Game of Life to effective field theories, biological evolution, and functionalist accounts of the mind, the article defends a stratified but unified ontology: a world containing many genuine levels of structure without violating causal closure or introducing additional fundamental forces.

The result is a form of realism without fundamentalism: to be real is not necessarily to be fundamental.
